The following is from Linda Johnson: Associate Athletic Director, NCAA CHAMPS Life Skills Director of Oregon State University.

Joe,

I would like to thank you so much for your fantastic presentation to the student athletes of Oregon State University. Your story is incredible, your delivery of this story is very polished and your message extremely effective.
As you know, it can be challenging to manage 480 student athletes at one time. You did this very well. Watching the presentation myself, I couldn't help but think that my 18 year old son should have been sitting in the audience to hear your message; the same one I give him daily, but as parents know - the same message delivered by a different mouth falls on hearing ears. It is a miracle!
Our student athletes have heard several presentations of issues surrounding decisions and drinking. Your presentation was effective to our student athletes because we had the ground work laid. Plus your very pointed and graphic video drove the message home. Yes they are their own person and can make their own choices/decisions but these do have an impact on all the individuals surrounding them who love them.
How grateful we are that your are able to deliver such a pointed message and I know it landed on hearing ears.
The second page of this letter is exact emails from student athletes in response to my request for feedback about your presentation. I was pleased, I think you will be too.
May all your audiences be as respectful as the OSU Beavers. Our best to you and your travels.

"That was a very realistic presentation. I think it actually had an impact on many of the student athletes that were present tonight. It kind of scared me actually, but I know it is realistic and something like that could happen to anyone. makes you appreciate life more." Women's Gymnast

"I though he did a great job speaking to us. I was very shocked and in awe by the video and the stories he had for us. I think it was a good idea to have him speak to us. I am sure it impacted a number of students, including me. Your actions definitely do determine your future. Thank you Linda for letting us listen to Joe and thank you to him as well." Wow, I thought tonight was a good Life Skills presentation! I thought the message Joe brought home was so truthful. I think everyone in the room tonight realized how often we do take life for granted. Because we think we are invincible and don't think it will happen to us, just as Joe said. It was awesome to see the impact of his presentation in the room. Typically, at most life skills meetings, people are talking, whispering, making silly comments and/or are obviously not paying attention. Tonight it was so great to see the room so moved by the stories Joe had to share. It was an eye-awaking reality! I definitely called my parents afterwards and told them I love them, to always buckle up and don't ever drink and drive."

I am not sure how it was for others, but last nights event was eye opening and is a great reminder about making good choices. I believe those stories with the photos really left an impression on some people last night that made them as well just sit and evaluate their previous decisions." Men's Wrestling Team Member

I thought that this was the best life skills presentation we have had since I have been here. He captivated the audience and sent us home with some new insight."

I loved this life skills presentation. I think it may have been my favorite one. It really makes you think about choices that we make everyday, and how they can make a huge impact on your life. Thanks for bringing Joe in!"
