All of you know that I was once paralyzed from the neck down, and was told that spending my life in a wheel chair was a real likelihood. But with opportunity, one can accomplish the near improbable. My spinal cord gave me an opportunity to have a recovery that most Neurologist's just shake their head at in disbelief. But it wasn't just the opportunity, it was also my desire, effort, my focus and my belief that propelled my recovery. Now imagine the opportunity before you, whether it's that promotion, to start a new business, to grow your business, to be a better person, to lose weight, to be lower your golf handicap, etc. Now matter what it is, it can be done.
The point of this newsletter is; that you too can accomplish whatever it is you set out to do, as long as you have that opportunity. So many people in our country settle for mediocrity. Don't let that be you!
I have proven myself with my recovery over my spinal cord injury, but there is more to life than just that. Yet what I learned about myself all came from that accomplishment.
Five years ago I set a goal to be a single digit handicap golfer. That's an individual that shoots scores of high 70's to low 80's consistently. To do this, I had to overcome many obstacles. The biggest obstacle was the fact that I am still partially paralyzed in my upper extremities. For a business that would be like having 40% of your work force gone, and yet you still want to grow your business by 40% or more. This would pose a problem if you allowed it to. But you have to work with what you've got. No excuses. So I set the goal to be a single digit handicap golfer, and I wanted to reach that goal in 3 years, and drop my handicap from 17.6 to at least 9.9.
The beauty of golf is that it teaches you a great deal about life and even business. In golf, you have to learn to be tremendously focused on every thing you do. You also need to work extremely hard to improve your game. It won't happen just because you want it to. You have to be able to learn from your mistakes, and then be able to incorporate that lesson, so you don't do it the next time.

By the year 2009, my handicap had gone from a 17.6 all the way down to an 8.7. I had accomplished the goal I set for myself. It took everything I had ever learned from my injury to achieve that goal. There were so many times while on the course where I would hit a terrible shot, or shoot a very high score and my frustration levels were through the roof. Yet I knew that it wasn't going to be easy, anything worth accomplishing never is easy. If I can accomplish that goal, than I know for a fact that you too can accomplish your goals.

Never give up, never quit trying, Thomas Edison once said; "That are greatest weakness lies in giving up, and the best way to succeed is to always try just one more time."
Good luck with your goals. I know that you all will accomplish them if you really are prepared to do what it takes.

Next post I will talk more about goals. Why you need them, why you must write them down!!

Take care,

Joe Rhea

Happy Holidays!!

I can't believe we are done with yet another decade. It seems like only yesterday when we were all concerned with Y 2 K. This decade has been one for the ages. 50 years from now, if we are still fortunate to be walking this great planet, we will all look back and still know where we were exactly on September 11th, 2001. You see September 11th, 1984 was the day I broke my neck, and my life changed forever. So it had already been a day of reckoning for me. I had used that day to reflect on my life and what I had learned as a result of living through a catastrophic event. I learned that life is short, that it's not guaranteed. I learned that life can be forever changed in a split second, and it is never exactly as it seems. But mostly I had learned that life is meant to be cherished and embraced. To be lived to it's fullest, and to live it exactly how you want. Because there are no promises of tomorrow. So when I saw those planes hit the World Trade Centers, I felt the pain and anguish and terror all over again. The incredible fear that life is so fragile. Yes the terrorist's took something away from us all that day, a little bit of our freedom, our trust in our fellow man. But what they did not expect was that some of us, learned to appreciate life even more, to live life even better, and love life even deeper. Yes it can be very difficult to find a silver lining in tragedy, but when you do, it's even greater.
Yes this has been one crazy decade. We have seen our nation elect an African-American as President in Barack Obama. I was watching the election with my wife Jenny and our beautiful daughter Molly Jayne. We both knew that we witnessed the kind of history that will be remembered by all who saw it forever. It truly was an amazing moment in time. We also witnessed two wars, and thousands of young men and women lose their lives. Whether you agree with the wars or not, any loss of life is tragic in my book. I live with the notion that we only get one life, and to have end to soon is indeed a terrible waste.
I could on and on about this past decade and what I learned from it. But that is not necessary. What I most want to convey to you the reader and to you my friend, that no matter where you are, no matter what you are doing, remember that tomorrow is not promised. Love deeper, speak sweeter, give forgiveness, live like you are dying, yes Tm McGraw said it perfect.

Happy Holidays!!!

Joe

Greetings everyone!

I know it has been a long time since my last newsletter. I promise that I will write more this upcoming year. I wanted to let everyone know that my book is now in the hands of an editor/publisher, and I am really excited about it finally getting published. Please let me know if you would like a copy. It is titled "Why You Got Screws In Your Brains?"

Last year was a tough year for the Rhea family. The economy really hit hard. Schools had slashed their budgets so much that I only had a few opportunities to speak. But with a new school year brings new hope. I have several schools that are planning to bring me in this fall. I hope that the trend continues. So if you know of any school that is in need of a alcohol awareness program, please pass them my website.

Times have been tough for most of us. But each and every one of us has the ability and the strength to work through it. Why? Because we have to. We owe it to ourselves and our families to persevere and be strong. Yes it can be difficult, but life is difficult, life is unfair. We all know this. So it should not be a surprise that there are going to be tough times. But when we work through those tough times, when we come out ahead, man it sure feels good. The reward of knowing that you did it is awesome. So remember that no matter how tough the times are, you can get through it! I know you can! Just believe in yourself and great things will happen!

I want to thank each and every one of you for your support and all of the kinds words that you have ever spoken to me. It means so much. I want you all to know that I am always available if any of you would like to speak with me. All you have to do is email.

Until my next post, wishing you all success and happiness.

Joe

Greetings Evereyone!

I hope that everyone has a very happy holiday season!!! I had called his office and left a message with his secretary to have him call me.

You never know if a head coach, especially one in his first year, will give you a call back.

Then one Saturday night, the telephone rang. I turned down the television set and answered the phone with a "hello."

"Joe Rhea," the voice on the other end of the phone said. "This is Coach Mark Mangino of the Kansas football team."

In a split second, I jumped up from lying down on my couch and stood erect, as if I were standing at attention.

I could not believe that Coach Mangino was actually calling me.

Here is a man, a head coach who probably had a million things to do, yet he took the time to speak with me on the phone and listened to what I had to say.

We spoke for 40 minutes. He did not have to give me that kind of time, but he did.
I hung up the phone and thought to myself that if this man would give a complete stranger that much of his valuable time that he was really going to be the kind of coach who took the time to know his players.

Eight years later, his record speaks for itself.

So as I walked into the doors of the new Kansas football offices, Coach Mangino was there to greet me.

"It's great to see you again, Joe," he said as he shook my hand. "You ready to get after them?"

"Oh, yeah!"

As we walked into the conference room, the entire team was there already.
Senior quarterback Todd Reesing and senior wide receiver/quarterback Kerry Meier were in the front row, sitting right next to each other.

As Coach Mangino walked to the podium, I watched as his players followed his every move. Every single player was paying attention, ready to listen to what the head coach was about to say.

"Men, today we have a gentleman who truly understands what it means to go through adversity, to have overcome incredible odds," Mangino said.

"When you hear his story, you realize that what we do is really just a game. So please help me welcome, Joe Rhea."

Then they all clapped in unison, two claps.

My heart pounding, palms feeling the sweat within them, I began to speak.
As I told them my story, I could see them look at me, and I could feel their intensity.

They looked at me and understood what it meant to go through real adversity.
I told them that having the right attitude when faced with tough times will help get through it — that tough times do not build character, but rather, reveal it.
I told them that if they don’t believe that they can win against an opponent, they won't.

I told them many things, but most importantly, I told them that no matter what they did on the football field to give all that they had. So that when they look back many years later, they can remember about what was, and not ever have to think, "what if."

As a speaker, you can only hope that maybe something you said will get through, will help them be better, work harder, appreciate more.

I admitted to them that I was a Jayhawk, and talking to them was a real treat for me.
Now let’s watch and see how the season turns out.

Read the article in its original location

I want to share this letter with you. It was very moving. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Joe

Joe,
My name is Chris Hayes and I came up to you this afternoon to thank you for taking the time to come speak to us today. I was inspired by what you said and took not only your message about good decisions (specifically buckling up), but also the reminder to be incredibly grateful for the opportunities and blessings we often take for granted. One of my best friends in High School didn't have nearly the traumatic injury you sustained, but he did have a malignant tumor on his C4 and C5's so when they did surgery to remove it, he had to wear a halo for almost a year. To this day, he has no mobility in his neck and suffers some of the same issues it seems you deal with on a daily basis. I know how hard it was for him, and can only imagine what it is like on a kid. I know you mentioned a number of times you in many ways live vicariously through us, but

I wanted to share a few thoughts I had.I have two main goals with my baseball career. The first is to win a World Championship with the Royals. Secondly, I want to be able to reach out to people and help them in any way I can with the additional exposure and notoriety being a baseball player brings. The story you told of Frank White made me yearn for a day when I can brighten a kids life if only a fraction as much as Frank was able to with you. Neither of my goals have been reached yet, so today, when you were delivering your message, I had to experience my second goal vicariously through you. I can't imagine the frustration it must be, probably even to this day, to know God blessed you with the ability to play for the Royals and then have it escape in the blink of an eye. But today I hope you take pride in the fact that you have risen above all the adversity and been able to reach out to people and benefit their lives in such large numbers. I admire you equally for your recovery and for your ability to deliver such a message to so many people. As far as my second goal, I'll say it again, today I was living vicariously through you. When it comes to my first goal of winning a World Championship with the Royals, I know perhaps nothing will be able to replace actually being there on the field, but I hope you will feel like you are as much a part of it as the players on the field. I meant what I said today about our organization going in the right direction. I honestly believe it and plan on being in KC in the near future to help the team win it all. When that amazing October evening comes, I hope I get a chance to come in for a few late inning outs. And when it does, you will be on the field with me in my thoughts. You said something today along the lines of "No matter how tense or stressful the situation in the biggest game, just think of me and know that I would do anything to be in that situation."
Again, I know you'd rather be in my shoes than in yours when that time comes, but I hope when it does, you feel like you are right there in the game. Regardless of who's on the mound or at bat in that game, they will have your message in the back of their head whether they know it or not.I feel incredibly grateful for the opportunities I have been given in my life. What you said today was a great reminder and strengthened my gratitude. I very much look forward to reaching both the goals I have within baseball, I hope you realize you have already achieved my second and I look forward to being able to "share" the first with you in the near future.Take care and again, thank you.

Chris Hayes

Hello Everyone

I would like to share with you all a story about me that was done on KMBC Channel 9 News.

Just follow the link to http://www.kmbc.com/video/17996947/index.html

I hope you all enjoy it!

Thanks so much for coming to my website.

Joe Rhea

Recently I spoke at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma Washington, and it was a fantastic time for me. It was my first time to visit the Emerald City and the great Pacific North West. The response from the student-athlete's afterwards was awesome. It always make's me feel like I am truly making a difference in this world. The Asst. Athletic Director Jennifer Thomas took the time to write a recommendation for me, and I would like to share with you.

Joe Rhea recently spoke with the student-athletes at Pacific Lutheran University and did a great job. His life lessons were thought provoking, informative, and powerful. Most of our students have not been exposed to the situations that Joe has encountered therefore, the personal accounts he shared made the presentation more powerful and memorable. He held the audience of 500 student-athletes captive for the whole hour.

On behalf of all of our student-athletes, thank you for coming to Pacific Lutheran University to present your message of “Bars, Cars, and Catastrophes”.

Jennifer Thomas
Asst. When I was a boy, ASU was the one and only school that I wanted to attend. I wanted to play baseball for the Sun Devils more than words can say. Unfortunately, that did not happen, as I broke my neck and suffered my spinal cord injury at the age of 14. So speaking there was a huge thrill for me. I may have not attended the school or played baseball for ASU, but what I did do may have an even greater impact. I think that's pretty cool! Joe

Joe Rhea is truly a dynamic speaker with an inspirational message whom I highly recommend. We invited Joe to speak with our incoming freshman student-athletes this August at our Student-Athlete Orientation and Joe did a phenomenal job. He is extremely engaging, uses impactful media and tells a truly heartfelt personal story.

Joe was very accommodating and actually combined two of his programs for us; “Freshman Now” and “Bars, Cars and Catastrophe”. He spoke with our freshman on the importance of making good decisions, especially when it comes to alcohol, and the importance of setting goals in all facets of your life. His presentation and graphic videos truly made our students think about the consequences of the decisions they make every day.

Our students were awed by Joe’s personal story, the videos that he showed and the message he shared. We would love to bring Joe back to speak with a larger group of our student athletes so that they all have the privilege of hearing his message.

Mr. Jean Boyd

Associate Athletic Director
Student Athlete Development
Arizona State University

(480) 965-0989; FAX - (480) 727-7588; jean.boyd@asu.edu

"Vision without Proper Action = Hallucination" - Always Compete with Passion and Character!

Hello Everyone

I recently spoke at Mesa Community College and had a wonderful experience. It’s not often that one becomes inspired by listening to another's story like the one you told to our 350 student-athletes. From everyone at Mesa Community College we feel very fortunate for being able to hear one of the most incredible and inspirational messages on ”Think First, Think Big”.
Your unique ability to speak from the heart and with such honesty, and your ability to hold the audience spellbound was amazing. There was absolute silence as the student-athletes listened intently during your entire presentation. I also want to commend you on your use of videos that were both informative and impactful. I know from the comments of everyone at the presentation that our students will remember this presentation and make good decisions in their personal life as college students at Mesa.
On behalf of our student-athletes, and all those involved in this wonderful day. Thank you for sharing your life altering experience and allowing others to learn from your tragedy. Every college and student-athlete in America should have the opportunity and privilege of hearing your message. First let me give a little background as to how KCP&L got together. Last February I received a phone call from a girl that works at the Think First office of Columbia. She had asked me f I would be able to speak at KCP&L's safety kick off luncheon. Of course I agreed, but was a bit apprehensive about speaking to adults about "Think First." After the luncheon I left feeling like I had done a good job, and thought that it was very well received. Well apparently it was! In May I was asked to come back and speak to their entire staff, but this time, in 9 different training sessions. Woohoo!!! Having just finished the final session last week, the feedback has been fantastic. It has reiterated to me that every single one of us needs to be reminded about how valuable are life is, and how easily it can change in a split second. So I would like to share with you all just a few of the many emails that I received personally from the employee's of KCP&L.

If you would like to talk to me about this presentation for your employee's, just give a call or shoot me an email.

Joe

Good safety meeting Vonda. No doubt the most difficult one I have ever sat through. Susan I lost our oldest daughter nearly three years ago in a roll-over. She was not wearing her seat belt and was thrown from the car. I think it is good that KCP&L sponsored Joe Rhea so that we are reminded of how fragile life is.
Dave.

I wanted to Thank You, for allowing me to attend the safety meeting. Although we all have heard and know how important safety is, it was very meaningful to have it reinforced. I really appreciated the meeting and it has enlightened me on things that I can do better to practice a better safety lifestyle in my life.BIG THANKS,Rashaunda Price

Hi Joe..
Just wanted to drop you a note of thanks for sharing your story and the program with us. It was very thought provoking and I found myself really paying attention to what I'm doing when I'm behind the wheel. I also found myself paying more attention to others as they're driving and what I saw really shocked me. Joe talks from personal experience, and how one split second of careless thinking can drastically change our lives forever. I asked Joe if there are other scheduled presentations within the community where we could take family members (because his videos are a powerful component of the message), but Joe says he usually speaks at schools. Joe’s message entitled, “Bars, Cars and Catastrophes”, helped to remind all of us of the responsibility we each have for our actions. The topic of alcohol, drunk driving, and other driving related safety precautions are all covered throughout his presentation. Some of the graphic images and personal accounts shared throughout his talk helped to make the message alarming, real, and most importantly, memorable.

Joe’s own tragic story is woven throughout the presentation which helped our students to see firsthand the effects a spinal and similar injuries can have on a person. Joe is a passionate person who shares a message that today’s students can relate to. I just got back from speaking at Eastern Illinois University and had a great time. I am really proud of the feedback I received immediately following my presentation last night from the students. There were tears and hugs and most of thanks. I know that my presentation is getting through. The following is from The Daily Eastern News.

http://www.dennews.com/home/index.cfm?event=displayArticle&ustory_id=d6962514-9e7d-4698-ae8d-b9c923ce8243

Joe Rhea holds a model brain while speaking about preventative tramatic injuries in the Grand Ballroom of Martin Luther King Jr University Union Wednesday evening.
Rhea talks about drinking and driving
By: Ashley Mefford/Activities Reporter
Posted: 9/13/07Certain days will always bring back memories. For Joe Rhea, that day was Sept. 11, 1984. On that day, Rhea was paralyzed during a football accident. Rhea spoke in the Grand Ballroom of the Union on Wednesday night. Sometimes there are defining days for people and for Rhea Sept. 11 was defining for him. With Sept. 11, 2001, the idea of a defining day made even more sense. The fact that his accident happened on a Sept. 11 also tied into it. When an event like one of these happens, life takes on a different meaning then before. "There are life and death situations when life takes on a greater meaning, one can learn and grow from a catastrophe," Rhea said. Purpose is also given because of events such as these. "For 23 years after my accident, I had questions," Rhea said. For the most part, Rhea's main question was "Why did I have to break my neck?" Rhea began speaking with the foundation called Think First in 2001. The main purpose for Think First is to get prevention about drinking and driving out to the public. The age bracket of 16-25 years old is when people have the biggest chance of getting a brain or spinal cord injury. Car crashes are the place where injuries are most likely to happen.Too many people have a "not me syndrome," Rhea said. "This is why I do this - it happens everyday," he said. Throughout the presentation, Rhea gave multiple examples of college-age students who had gone through similar experiences as him. One such person was named Troy. Troy was an athlete and had a full ride to Texas Tech. His whole future changed in an instant when he was in a car accident resulting from alcohol. Troy stayed out until 2 a.m. after a party one night and ended up being thrown 25 feet into a creek. He broke his back and was in the creek for two days after his accident. "Often times we forget how our decisions affect our family," Rhea said.Troy had to hear his cell phone ring while he couldn't move after being thrown from the car. Currently, Troy still has to deal with the repercussions of his accident. He can't walk and uses a wheelchair. To help prevent stories such as Troy's, Rhea teaches a class called the Young Traffic Offenders in Kansas City. This class is six hours long and is a "physical journey," Rhea said. Rhea takes his students to the emergency room to see actual patients who have gone though drinking and driving accidents. Some of the patients the students see are in comas. The visits to the ER help the students see what one decision can do. Once students learn that they are not exempt from alcohol related incidents, the better off they are. "There are two types of people, those who get it and those who don't," Rhea said. Not paying attention is the number one cause of car crashes, not drinking and driving. Alcohol cuts reaction time down a fraction of a second. This is all the time that is needed for a life-changing event to happen. "Most people crash within five miles of their house," Rhea said.Rhea has been there when families have been waiting to see their loved ones who have been injured. "If you could see what I've seen, seen the tears in the mother's eyes, you would never drink," he said.Overcoming his paralysis made Rhea know that what you might be told at one point does not necessarily mean it is going to be like that forever. "If you want something bad enough, almost anything is possible," he said. Rhea ended the presentation with a quote from the movie Gladiator. "What we do in life echoes in eternity." "What is your echo going to be?" Rhea askedJessica Huffman, a sophomore physical education major, enjoyed Rhea's presentation. "I thought it was very good because sometimes people lose focus," Huffman said.University Members Against Drunk Driving sponsored the event, along with the athletics department. Micah Rucker, who started UMADD, said he did so in order to help prevent drinking and driving.
© Copyright 2007 The Daily Eastern News

Hi everyone, and thanks for visiting my web site. Last night I spoke at The University of Colorado in Boulder. It was amazing! I had a wonderful evening and was treated incredibly. Colorado has one of the most beautiful campuses in America. The following is already a response from a student-athlete on the CU Ski Team. It again reinforces that my message does indeed make a difference and moves people. I am honored to feel so fortunate to have such an opportunity.

Hi Joe,

Thanks again for your presentation last night. I’m still receiving feedback from last night’s presentation, but this one really stood out. I wanted to share the reaction of one of our skiers. Her feedback is recounted below:

I just wanted to put in some feedback because I thought the talk made a huge impact on my teammates on the ski team.

For me, an athlete with a history of six head injuries, the worst of which was the result of a driving incident where I broke the window behind me with my head (fortunately I was wearing my seat belt in the backseat and there was no drinking involved, only a immature driver behind the wheel), I had a lot of personal investment coming into this talk. I did not realize how hard it would hit home.

Before last night, my teammates always avoided talking about my current neurological state. My neurologist just recently gave me the direct and firm "no"
on whether or not I would ever ski again. My balance is shifty and my entire left side is structurally different from my right side. My right eye does not track left or right, only up and down. And my heart races because my brain cannot control it and this leads to a major lack of sleep each and every night.

As we walked out of the room, my teammates came up to me individually to ask if I was okay. They've never done this before. I don't ask for them to do this, but it was quite evident that they, like me, were personally moved by the talk, enough so that they would approach me and ask me if I needed anything.

I appreciate that Joe Rhea was brought in and I think it helps to shed light on the day to day battles people with brain and neck injuries face. However minor the change may be, any change in motor skills makes a huge impact on an athlete.
It is important to bring these issues to the surface because it raises the level of awareness. In turn, this awareness has given way to support and more knowledge on the subject.

So thank you.
Woman's Ski team member

Thank you,

Ryan Kataoka
Academic Coordinator
University of Colorado

Wow the summer has gone by so fast. Even though its blistering hot here in Kansas City today 98*, I still prefer heat over freezing any day.

I know I haven't updated my blog in awhile, and that's because I have been concentrating on finishing my book, "Hey Mister Why You Got Screws In Your Brains?" and also doing the leg work that needs to be done. I have been calling and emailing and sending out marketing materials, etc... With the hope that my message and story will intrigue them enough to ask me to speak at their Universities.

Thus far it seems to be paying off, but I am so driven that I find myself never satisfied with the amount of schools I have on the calendar. But this fall is looking good; here are just a few of the schools that have asked me to come speak to their students:

University of Colorado,

Troy University in Alabama,

Eastern Illinois University,

Wingate University in North Carolina.

With more waiting to find the right date to bring my presentation in. It's exciting traveling the country and seeing the different parts of the Union. It moves me very deeply when I visit a place and leave with a sweet reminder of why I do what I do. The thank yous that I receive, the gratitude that is shown from the Directors who ask me to speak, telling me they know I have saved lives.

Everyday I learn new things, ways to get my message out there. It would be easy if I were famous, but I am not. It would be easier if I had actually played collegiate baseball and excelled as I had for seen. Yet I only wish that the individuals who reads this, and with whom I will speak to in the future; understand that we need difference makers, we need leaders who are willing to take a stand. I am one of those individuals, and will always be.

Thanks again for taking the time to read a little of what I feel is so important!

Joe

The following is from Linda Johnson: Associate Athletic Director, NCAA CHAMPS Life Skills Director of Oregon State University.

Joe,

I would like to thank you so much for your fantastic presentation to the student athletes of Oregon State University. Your story is incredible, your delivery of this story is very polished and your message extremely effective.
As you know, it can be challenging to manage 480 student athletes at one time. You did this very well. Watching the presentation myself, I couldn't help but think that my 18 year old son should have been sitting in the audience to hear your message; the same one I give him daily, but as parents know - the same message delivered by a different mouth falls on hearing ears. It is a miracle!
Our student athletes have heard several presentations of issues surrounding decisions and drinking. Your presentation was effective to our student athletes because we had the ground work laid. Plus your very pointed and graphic video drove the message home. Yes they are their own person and can make their own choices/decisions but these do have an impact on all the individuals surrounding them who love them.
How grateful we are that your are able to deliver such a pointed message and I know it landed on hearing ears.
The second page of this letter is exact emails from student athletes in response to my request for feedback about your presentation. I was pleased, I think you will be too.
May all your audiences be as respectful as the OSU Beavers. Our best to you and your travels.

Linda Johnson

"That was a very realistic presentation. I think it actually had an impact on many of the student athletes that were present tonight. It kind of scared me actually, but I know it is realistic and something like that could happen to anyone. makes you appreciate life more." Women's Gymnast

It was pretty good. It it home, maybe a little graphic for some. better than most." Women's Crew Team Member

"I though he did a great job speaking to us. I was very shocked and in awe by the video and the stories he had for us. I think it was a good idea to have him speak to us. I am sure it impacted a number of students, including me. Your actions definitely do determine your future. Thank you Linda for letting us listen to Joe and thank you to him as well." Women's Golf Team Member

Wow, I thought tonight was a good Life Skills presentation! I thought the message Joe brought home was so truthful. I think everyone in the room tonight realized how often we do take life for granted. Because we think we are invincible and don't think it will happen to us, just as Joe said. It was awesome to see the impact of his presentation in the room. Typically, at most life skills meetings, people are talking, whispering, making silly comments and/or are obviously not paying attention. Tonight it was so great to see the room so moved by the stories Joe had to share. It was an eye-awaking reality! I definitely called my parents afterwards and told them I love them, to always buckle up and don't ever drink and drive."
Women's crew member

I am not sure how it was for others, but last nights event was eye opening and is a great reminder about making good choices. I believe those stories with the photos really left an impression on some people last night that made them as well just sit and evaluate their previous decisions." Men's Wrestling Team Member

I thought that this was the best life skills presentation we have had since I have been here. He captivated the audience and sent us home with some new insight."
Men's Football Team Member

I loved this life skills presentation. I think it may have been my favorite one. It really makes you think about choices that we make everyday, and how they can make a huge impact on your life. Thanks for bringing Joe in!"
Women's Golf Team Member

Well Oregon State went fantastic!! As you know, the audience was silent at the end of your presentation. This was extremely unusual and MANY students picked up on this. It was definitely my pleasure to have you on campus. A visit from you may not happen every year, but definitely every three!"

She also informed that she will be sending me feedback from her athletes and a a letter of reccomendation. I want to share a part of it with you.

"I wanted to take a moment to again share with you our deep gratitude for your tireless efforts to ensure MO patients have the same access to lifesaving cures and treatments as other Americans, through the passing of the Missouri Stem Cell Research and Cures Initiative.

Ours was not an easy mountain to climb, and we know that it was your determination that brought about the passage of Amendment 2. We know how hard you worked, and we couldn't have asked for a more dedicated team. We were honored by your passion and your commitment."

This was a life changing experience for me, and one that I am honored to have been a part of. I am proud of the work I did with the coalition. I bring the same passion to all that I do. I know of no other way.

Dream Big, but be willing to do the work to get it done.

Joe

Greetings!!

I just got back from Atlanta, where I was a Keynote Speaker for the Southeastern Inter Fraternal Conference (SEIFC). I had a fantastic time and met so many great people. I want to personally thank the SEIFC committee for the tremendous opportunity they gave me. To be able to share my message to so many different schools that were represented was amazing. Like last year I want to share with you some of the evaluations from the conference. Its in these evals where I am able to truly see that what I do, while intense and powerful does indeed make a difference. These are evals of Bars Cars and Catastrophes!

"Very impactful! He very moved myself & my students."
"Excellent Presentation. He did a great job and makes you think about your own life."
"Every college man needs to hear this."
"I think the graphic content was very necessary. It brings a much more realness to the concept."
"This is the best session for our age of people. I think the entire world should see that video!"
"Fantastic keynote speaker. He really hit the target audience for this conference."
"Thanks for sharing your story. Wish it could have been longer. I wanted to hear the rest."
"Excellent."
"Powerful speech. It really shocks you into the reality and severity of this. Great shock effect presentation!"
"Very emotionally charged, excellent presentation."
"Not after lunch please."

There were over 200 evaluations and 90% were like what you have just read. Some however did not like my intensity, my straight forwardness, or my disdain for people who continue to choose poorly. But mostly people walked away reminded that life is precious and short. To value it, and not take for granted.

I enjoyed it immensely!

Two weeks ago I spoke at the University of Nebraska and had a great response from their athletes. I think it was great for all of us to get to hear about the struggle that you experienced and the challenges you overcame to get where you are today. I have been hearing a lot of people say that they are now buckling up every time they get in their car. Sometimes as student-athletes we feel invincible, and you gave us a good reminder that we are not, and that the number one way to protect ourselves when getting behind the wheel or stepping foot in a car is simply to buckle up. We appreciate your time and willingness to come educate us. I know that your video and story affected a lot of us and I am grateful that maybe it will come to protect or save one of our friends, or ourself, in the future. I had an amazing time and was treated first class. Being able to see the wonderful facilities and the entire complex was outstanding. Mr. Keith Zimmer my host, was incredibly kind and was also very helpful. I spoke to the entire athletic department, over 500 student-athletes. The very best athletes in college!

I think it was received very well considering I was speaking during the Colts-Patriots game.
It never ceases to amaze me the responses I get afterwards. I am always so hard on myself and my presentation, that I sometimes tend to forget that I am indeed getting through to them. Hopefully I will have feedback for all to read very shortly. They did however video tape my entire presentation and I will plan on having a link for you to see it for yourselves.

Have a great day!!!!

Joe

Sports
I, ______ ______ , do hereby resolve for 2007

By: Mark Dewar, Sports EditorWednesday, January 10, 2007 4:42 PM CST

You make them. You break them.
Still, who could resist? Behold, a few willing good sports out there who have answered the call for their 2007 New Year’s resolutions.
Some stepped up with an absolute fire, including, not surprisingly, area motivational speaker/activist Joe Rhea.
Rhea is the former school football standout at Indian Trail Junior High Football in Olathe who amazingly overcame the temporary paralysis he suffered on the school gridiron in 1984 at the age of 14.
Today Rhea works to inspire others as the lead speaker for the Think First Foundation of Kansas City, an accident prevention educational organization at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo.
Rhea gave his wholehearted approval to this undertaking, saying, “Wow. I think it’s great you want to put people’s goals in the paper. It is a great reminder for everyone to have them and write them down! Put them in a place where you are going to see them every day. If you do that, you will accomplish them.”
To a person, we credit each of the following athletic types who returned fire on my inquiry, who today are putting on display their willingness to put their personal goals out there in print for all the world to see.Best wishes for a happy and accomplished 2007 to all Sun area athletes and sports watchers!•
Kansas City Chiefs mascot KC Wolf, Dan Meers: “Actually, this year I turn 40 years old, so one of my resolutions is a commitment to maintain physical fitness. I want to make sure KC Wolf keeps those sexy 85-inch hips he’s got. My other resolution this year is for living my life for the things that are important to me and not just the things that are urgent. That means my faith and my family and having a whole lot of fun along the way. The three f’s: My faith, family and fun along the way. Like always.”
• Rockhurst High School head football coach Tony Severino, who lives in Overland Park: “I’m not a big New Year’s resolution guy. I make little resolutions throughout the whole year, so it’s not just one big one little goals in the off-season, goals in the summer, goals during the season, little goals all the time. My goal in 2007 is never to read another article ever written about Terrell Owens, the absolute ‘I’ guy in ‘team.’ I just refuse to read any more on that.

• Joe Rhea, motivational speaker/activist: “While I have many goals this year, I will give my most important three: 1) Personal: To constantly work on improving my marriage; 2) Professional: To finish my book; and 3) Individual: To get my golf handicap below six this summer. If I accomplish these goals, 2007 will be a fantastic year!
• Wendy Louque, assistant women’s soccer coach at Johnson County Community College: “We are free to lose that 10 pounds, work out more, pray more faithfully, spend more time with family and pay off the credit cards. The list can go on and on. But the reality is that those long lists of New Year’s Resolutions rarely become a reality. For me, the focus in 2007 will be on one word. You know the phrase, ‘Be careful what you pray for?’ Like when you pray for patience and all you get is trials, problems and situations in which you need to practice patience? Well, that really is what I want - to be more patient with my players, my husband, and especially, my children.”
• Rachel Halloran, the All-Sun Girls Golfer of the Year for 2006 and Blue Valley North senior: “One, check my cell phone messages and call them back; two, get my handicap down to a 1.5 or lower; and three, spend my freshman season at Marshall University (I orally committed over the holiday break) on the traveling team.”
• Kansas City Royals mascot Sluggerrr, Byron Shores: “Sluggerrr’s New Year’s resolutions for 2007 are: 1) No more ‘Desperate Housewives;’ 2) No more peanut butter cup chocolate concretes. (The tummy says yes, but the love handles say no!); and 3) No more 100-loss seasons. Hello, American League pennant!”
• Mike Dunn, head girls basketball coach, Notre Dame de Sion High School, who lives in Prairie Village: “To convince my junior forward, Kelley Murphy, to sing in front of the whole team. Let me know what you think! joerhea@joerhea.com

Sports

Paralysis benched
Mark Dewar, Sports Editor
November 16, 2006

Email to a friend

Voice your opinion

The six long, traumatic and unforgettable days Joe Rhea endured beginning on Sept. 11, 1984, have everything to do with the constant motion and passion for life this 36-year-old puts on display in his every waking moment and movement today.

During a football practice session at Indian Trail Junior High in Olathe, a then 14-year-old Rhea moved in from his defensive back position to make a tackle on a teammate at practice. It is the sort of hit this talented young athlete with a nose for the football had made many, many other times successfully.
Only this jarring hit would bring with it a horrifying result. Rhea lay motionless on the field after crashing into his teammate's thigh with the top of his helmet - an absolute no-no in the world of football do's and don'ts.
"I fractured my fourth and fifth vertebrae, and I also compressed my fifth vertebra and herniated my seventh," said Rhea, who asked of the personnel gathered to help him at the time, "Where are my arms?"
"That was the scariest moment I've ever had in my coaching career," said Jeff Meyers, then a first-year assistant at Indian Trails. Today Meyers is the veteran head football coach at Olathe East High School as well as the mayor of the city of Shawnee.
Paramedics took Rhea to Shawnee Mission Medical Center. He vomited with the news when doctors told him he had broken his neck.
The frightened teenager later would find some measure of solace in the fact his vertebrae had fractured in a vertical direction, saving his spine from additional horrors that might have resulted.
Whereas he had bruised his spinal cord, a severed, ripped or tear to the spinal cord would have paralyzed him for life.
His road back began when he lifted his left leg on the seventh day. The startling event following nearly a week as a quadriplegic that included the crushing sound of screws being placed into his skull in an attempt to immobilize his head, neck and spine and avoid further injury.
Today the 1988 Olathe South High School graduate, who attended the University of Kansas, faces a battery of daily aches and pains and an upper body with only limited function. (More on that below.) Still, Rhea has continued to live his life as an athlete, a fact proven by such feats as skiing double black ski slopes in Colorado.
"He's an amazing story," Meyers said.
But the Raytown resident's truest passion these days lies with working to keep others out of harm's way.
Rhea serves as the lead speaker for "Think First," a global non-profit organization that offers a local chapter at Research Hospital in Kansas City and teaches students in kindergarten through high school about brain and spinal cord safety.
Rhea also acts as moderator of the Young Traffic Offenders Program, (YTOP). This court-ordered program sends offenders ranging from age 16 into their 20's to a six-hour program that weaves through Research and provides a reality check of what can happen to the offender or a loved one upon doing something careless on the road.
His speaking engagements take him to points throughout the KC metropolitan area, and clearly from the positive feedback he receives at his Web site (www.joerhea.com), plenty of places well beyond.
The Sun caught up to Rhea, who is married to supportive wife Jennifer, somewhere in between his more than 100 stops a year as an inspirational speaker in demand to talk to him about his unbelievable recovery from the mishap that once threatened to sideline him for good.
Q. Dream scenario, Joe. You have the listening ear of every young football player in America. Tell America's wide-eyed kids how to make that tackle the right way.

A. With controlled rage. Look at what you are hitting every time, then drive your shoulder through the tackle and lay him out. Then help him up.

Q. Your message today is for people of all ages and extends far beyond your own miraculous recovery from temporary paralysis. You help others protect their own spinal cords from injury through "Think First" practices such as faithful seatbelt usage and relinquishing the wheel after drinking. Still, what does it do to your heart when you see that well-intentioned soccer mom driving along I-435 while talking on her cell phone ... and weaving?

A. It angers me. I want to be able to pull them over and let them know what I know - that kids die in car crashes more than any other cause of death at their age. I want them to get that getting from point A to point B is never guaranteed, so don't create more of an opportunity for that to happen.
Q. Thankfully most of us will never experience paralysis in our lifetimes. But what do we need to know most about that experience from the guy who has lived it?

A. That is like a death that you have to relive every day. To wake up and open your eyes and the first thought out of you brain is your spinal cord injury because you hurt physically, which then leads to emotional pain.

Q. We understand you are producing a book on your incredible life story. Is it on the market yet? If not, when do you expect it to hit bookstores?

A. I am currently writing my story, entitled "Why You Got Screws in Your Brains?" I am planning on finishing it by the new year. It's not easy, though, writing a book about yourself. I have to be honest, and there are things in my life that I am not proud of - behavioral issues mostly. I am hoping it will be in print by next year.
Q. Is there one most critical, central message you would like every single listener to your talks to hear and utilize?

A. Yes. It is to value life and believe they can accomplish the impossible.

Q. Olathe East coach Jeff Meyers, also the mayor of Shawnee, served among your assistant coaches at Indian Trail Junior High at the time of your accident and recalls you asking, "Where are my arms?" at the time of the tackle - and knew immediately things were not good. How did your life outlook change in that course of your six days of paralysis? There had to be a litany of things going on inside that 14-year-old boy's head during that stretch.

A. My outlook only intensified. When I asked, "Will I ever play football or baseball again?" I was told no. I was like, "what do you mean, no?" Call it denial, but I call it attitude. The right attitude. I was determined throughout the entire process of winning this battle. It was at night, though, when fear would enter, when I was alone and left by myself to sit and wonder. I think the fear was from not being able to move. It scares the hell out of you.

Q. On the seventh day you began to feel a bit and move again. Share with us your emotions at that very moment as best you can remember them.

A. Relief, an "I-told-you-so" kind of response in my head. My family was overwhelmed with emotions. Little did I know what I had in store for me, however. My spinal cord had been severely bruised and squeezed. My body had already started to atrophy and lose all of its muscle mass.

Q. The world came to appreciate in a large-scale way the delicate nature of our earthly existences on Sept. 11, 2001. But Joe Rhea came to that very same realization 17 years to the day earlier. What emotions stir inside you each time that date passes on the calendar?

A. A torrent of emotions, actually. But mostly I think about life now and how valuable it is. I think about how quickly life can change, in a split second, I am thankful for the awareness I have and the ability to appreciate it. But I would be lying if I didn't also tell you I feel anger, frustration and depression, too, because I am also reminded about the dark side of life. Which then again reminds me of why I do what I do.

Q. Are you a religious person? Were you a faith-based person prior to the accident, and are you today?
A. A lot of people make the assumption that I am a believer in God. A lot of them are thankful to God for my recovery. First and foremost, I do not blame God. I did this, not God. I am not a chosen one, nor am I special.

Q. A talented athlete as a boy, you dreamt of playing major league baseball like your idol, Frank White. Since that time you have gone on to live what appears to be a pretty big-league life in terms of helping others. Do you feel in hindsight that your accident happened for a reason? That is, have you been able to make peace with it?

A. Great question. Yes and no. I am not a believer in destiny. I think people create their own fates. They take what life throws at them, and some people weave floor mats, some people weave tapestries. It is up to you to make the most of your life. I am human, too. I still battle at times with my childhood dream of being a professional athlete, but that's not going to happen, so I've created a new dream and am making it happen.
Q. We understand you got to meet Frank White and share your story with him. Tell us how the two of you first became acquainted.

A. My mother worked for John Chezik (car dealership), and Frank White came in to lease a car. They started a friendship. He then one night magically showed up at my house in Olathe and had pizza with me. It was a boy's fantasy, but one that got even better. He went to my Cub Scout meeting with me! Imagine the look on all of the boys' and parents' faces when they saw Frank White. He signed every autograph, shook every hand and was proud to be my friend. It was at that moment I knew I wanted to be just like Frank White. I wanted to be able to make people feel like Frank White made me feel - amazing.

Q. Passionate sports fan that you have remained, have you had this experience? You are addressing a group of high-profile athletes and the fan in Joe Rhea thinks to himself, "Man, I can't believe I'm speaking to these people. A dream come true. This is really cool."

A. In Sept-ember I spoke to the Kansas Jay-hawks men's basketball team. They are my team, and I was honored to have Coach (Bill) Self contact me and ask me to speak to them. They were great. I am usually not that nervous when I speak anymore. That happens when you present over 100 times a year. But I was so nervous with them! I want them so badly to understand they have a chance at immortality. They have the talent, the team and the coach.

Q. While you appear the picture of health, there remain limitations. Among them, your right hand does not close properly and you cannot lift your arms above your head. Is there still much pain involved all these years later, and do you continue to receive treatment on a regular basis, or are you basically living through the aches and pains these days?

A. The picture of health is an illusion, I'm afraid. I try to remain as active as I can to keep my strength, but with the activity comes arthritis, tendinitis, joint pain, nerve pain. I am currently pondering surgery on my neck. It has progressively gotten worse, and I have been in a lot more pain lately.

Q. Your "Think First" speaking program is geared toward children kindergarten through high school protecting their spinal cords, while your "Bars, Cars and Catastrophes" program is aimed even more strongly at drinking and driving prevention. Can you share with us one helpful across-the-board tip regarding maintaining safety at any age?

A. That tip is to get rid of what I call the "Not-Me Syndrome," and believe that it can happen to you. Then simply to take that two seconds before anything you do and think first. It is a habit to get into that could save your life or the life of somebody you love.

Q. It is clear you are a man of inspirational quotes. We like the Joe Rhea quote you share on your Web site: "What we do in life echoes in eternity. How loud is your echo?" Share with us your favorite inspirational quote of all-time.

A. John Wooden once said, "Don't measure yourself by what you have accomplished, but by what you should have accomplished with your ability."
Q. You tell audiences in your talks of a 1953 Yale study regarding the setting of goals. Kindly share.

A. Having goals in life in tantamount to success. But just having them isn't enough. It's a start, but writing them down is crucial. In '53, Yale took a survey of its graduating class and asked the question, "Who has taken the time to write down their goals?" Three percent had. Well, that three percent 20 years later had accomplished more than the entire other 97 percent combined. It speaks volumes on the importance of taking the time to write down your goals.

Q. You were told to be prepared for the fact you would never walk again. What has that experience done for you in days since in terms of dealing with life's small annoyances that touch us all - placed on hold on the phone too long, stuck in traffic, rude waiters, etc?

A. It has given me awareness of my life and I am reminded daily that there are worse things in life that bother me. Those things are what they are - small annoyances.

Q. As a man of vision and dreams, what is the next item on your list of goals for your programs? Where would you like to see your work head in, say, the next 15 years?

A. The evolution of my speaking career is what I have set as my goal. To constantly grow and learn to become the best possible presenter I can be. Which in turn will enable my audiences to better understand my messages.

Q. There is no question there is a movie in all of this to go with your book. When Hollywood produces the story of your life someday, who should play the role of Joe Rhea, and why?

A. That is hard to say, because it is a story over a lengthy period. But I have always thought I would be perfect for this role (laughing). Only I can truly convey what it is I go through. A little Sylvester Stallone-ish, I know, but what can say? I'm Italian.

This is really great! I hope that they are able to see the impact that they too can make in this world outside of basketball.

Take Care Everyone,

Joe

Hello Everyone!

Summer is going well, and I am looking forward to the upcoming school year. All I can say is wow! Thank you to Amy Crosbie at Utah State for the opportunity to share my message. It really seems like it is making a difference! Please read remaining news as well. There is a lot of great feedback! Read aboutBars Cars and Catastrophes!

Joe,Utah State was extremely happy to have you on our campus to speak to the Greeks and to our student athlete population. You were so great to work with and it was nice to finally meet you face to face. You are an inspiring individual and a talented speaker. It does not matter who I am bringing in for programming, I always have a bit of anxiety before an event because I have required our student athletes to attend. My anxiety stems from the question are they going to enjoy it, are they going to leave this night thinking more deeply about what they have heard? The initial scene was familiar, tired athletes dragging their feet and sitting in the back of the auditorium. But all it took was you beginning to speak to them and I emphasize the words speak to them not at them but to them. Your presentation is a heavy one but rightfully so. The decisions you are asking them to be conscious of are a matter of life and death. No one wants to see the realities of car crashes that could have been prevented if someone would have just THOUGHT FIRST! College students, and definitely college student athletes are not invincible and that was proven in the video that you showed.I received a lot of verbal and written feedback. It is amazing to see what different people gained from your presentation. Your presentation was a perfect fit for us and I want to thank you for pursuing this line of work because there is not a person I know that would not benefit from you presentation!Below are emails that were sent to me the day after you visited Utah State in response to your presentation.

I came to talk to you today about last night. Wow, It was great! I really enjoyed it and the students I have talked to did as well. I have caught myself 3 times today forgetting to put my seat belt on right away, that will change for sure. Head Volleyball Coach.

I thought that the presentation was good. It made me think about how quickly things can change in your life and to make good decisions. It also made me feel sad for the people who have lost family members and friends because of bad choices of other people. Football player

I thought that last night was really good, it definitely hit home for me. It wasn't really the crashes and stuff like that that hit home it was just the fact that a brain or a spinal cord injury could change your life in an instant. I thought that he was very entertaining and had some good insights for us. I enjoyed the presentation. Womens soccer player

I thought that last nights presentation was powerful, Im not sure if I was motivated or just scared to death...but it definitely triggered something. I am one of those people who thinks I am invincible and don't wear my seatbelt, there was nothing my mom could do or say I just didn't ever get into the habit. After last night I will with out fail wear my seat belt every time I get into the car. Womens Tennis player

I loved hearing Joe. I believe he has saved lives by giving this message and showing that movie. Some of the girls on my team and I were talking after and we were saying that all high school kids taking drivers ed should have to watch that film and all those who are renewing their licenses. We think that many lives could be saved if more people see that. It was so moving. I loved what he had to share, his message was amazing. Life is so fragile and he just brought that reality to the surface. I'm thankful that I had the chance to hear him speak. It definitely changed my views on life and other things I do. I think it was a very good thing to have the athletes go to. It was awesome! Womens Soccer player

I really liked Joe Rhea's message. It was pretty graphic and some may say "hard to swallow" with the graphic pictures, but I think for most of the student-athletes that really do need to hear this message- that is what it takes- the raw reality of it. He was a very good speaker and in most presentations like this I feel like the speaker is preaching to me and I don't connect with them because I don't feel like they are like me. I enjoyed the presentation, but didn't feel it was something I needed to hear as I am past that phase of my life, but the message of wearing your seatbelt is for everyone and anyone. I enjoyed that he seemed young which made him more credible to me as I could relate to him. After the meeting I went up and thanked him for coming out to little Logan, Utah to speak to us. I liked it. Womens volleyball player

I really enjoyed his speech. I've worn my seat belt every time I have gotten into a car since then. Womens softball player

I thought it was a great lecture. It was well rounded and had special applications to athletes. There are times when I sit and think about what I would do if I couldn't be a normal member of society, it is so unfathomable. It definitely makes me think every time I get into a car about the consequences of every action when I drive. Womens softball player
I thought Joe was a great speaker. He told it how it is and made me think about the choices I make everyday. I have to admit that the program was very different from what I thought it was going to be. The program did leave me feeling a little depressed; yet humbled. Thank you for bringing him in to speak to us. - Gymnast

Amy CrosbieAcademic Advisor/ Life Skills CoordinatorUtah State University - Student Athlete Services

A recent email from a dear friend and incredible man and leader. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

Go, my friend, liberate the world.

Bernard Franklin, Phd.
President Penn Valley Community College

Hello again. Here is another great letter I would like to share with everyone! Please keep reading as the news below is equally inspiring! Joe

From: Feist Publications, Ed Fanning

I recently had the opportunity to see and hear Joe Rhea speak at Feist Publications. I was informed that he would be speaking to our group before anyone of us had actually heard him speak. I informed my associate that bringing in a speaker that he had not heard speak yet was risky. What if he was no good, boring, uninformative, etc…. We would be wasting our staffs time, not to mention our time as well. Joe quickly put my fears to rest, because of the adversity he has faced; he had a direct line into the hearts of our group of more than 50 sales people.
I have been speaking myself for a few years now, so I know a little about what it takes to be a successful speaker. Joe has that gift. He has a story that is incredibly powerful and motivational, but it is how he tells it that is truly inspiring. It was very refreshing and uplifting. Several of my staff came up to me afterwards and told me how much they enjoyed Joe’s speech. If you are looking for someone that will remind us of how blessed we are, how grateful we should be and of what it takes to go out and be successful every day, then it is without hesitation that I recommend Joe Rhea to you and your staff. I know he will do for you what he did for us.

Ed fanning

This is from Weber State University

Joe,

The seminar was great. All I can say is wow! Thank you to Amy Crosbie at Utah State for the opportunity to share my message. It really seems like it is making a difference! Please read remaining news as well. There is a lot of great feedback! Read about
Bars Cars and Catastrophes! Joe

Joe,
Utah State was extremely happy to have you on our campus to speak to the Greeks and to our student athlete population.
But all it took was you beginning to speak to them and I emphasize the words “speak to them” not at them but to them. Your presentation is a heavy one but rightfully so. The decisions you are asking them to be conscious of are a matter of life and death. No one wants to see the realities of car crashes that could have been prevented if someone would have just THOUGHT FIRST! College students, and definitely college student athletes are not invincible and that was proven in the video that you showed.
I received a lot of verbal and written feedback. It is amazing to see what different people gained from your presentation. Your presentation was a perfect fit for us and I want to thank you for pursuing this line of work because there is not a person I know that would not benefit from you presentation!
Below are emails that were sent to me the day after you visited Utah State in response to your presentation.

I came to talk to you today about last night. Wow, It was great! I really enjoyed it and the students I have talked to did as well. I have caught myself 3 times today forgetting to put my seat belt on right away, that will change for sure. –Head Volleyball Coach.

I thought that the presentation was good. It made me think about how quickly things can change in your life and to make good decisions. It also made me feel sad for the people who have lost family members and friends because of bad choices of other people. – Football player
– Women’s soccer player

I thought that last nights presentation was powerful, I’m not sure if I was motivated or just scared to death...but it definitely triggered something. I am one of those people who think I’m invincible and don’t wear my seatbelt, there was nothing my mom could do or say I just didn’t ever get into the habit. After last night I will with out fail wear my seat belt every time I get into the car. – Women’s Tennis player

– Women’s Soccer player

I liked it. – Women’s volleyball player

I really enjoyed his speech. I've worn my seat belt every time I have gotten into a car since then. – Women’s softball player

I thought it was a great lecture. It was well rounded and had special applications to athletes. There are times when I sit and think about what I would do if I couldn’t be a normal member of society, it is so unfathomable. It definitely makes me think every time I get into a car about the consequences of every action when I drive. – Women’s softball player

Joe,
I wanted to thank you for coming to speak to the Western Illinois University student-athletes on February 22nd. "One decision you make can change your life forever," Rhea said. The program emphasized the hazards for college-aged students of drinking and driving as well as the lifetime catastrophes, which can result from these preventable decisions. He added people between 16 and 25 years of age are most likely to be involved with drunken driving which can result in brain and spinal cord injuries. Rhea said he still asks himself why he has had to suffer this much even though he was not to blame."If three of 450 (people) said 'OK, I would never drink and drive again ever in my life,' I've done my job."Rhea said he hopes to give opportunities to think about treasuring individual lives and real stories of college athletes, whose lives changed dramatically because of one instance of driving under the influence. In his presentation, he disclosed his personal plight after he broke his neck and was left paralyzed from the neck down while playing football when he was 14 years old. His doctor said to be prepared to use a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Rhea said that day is a special day for him, his family, friends and the whole world to think about what life is. Rhea described his hardship to recover from his injury. "Every day of my life was as if I was running a marathon. That's how much my body goes through. It's fatigued, overstressed, overworked, it's weak, (because of the) spinal cord injury," Rhea said.Rhea expressed the indescribable and catastrophic feelings of not being able to use or feel his body from the neck down. He said the inability of doing ordinary things depressed him. It also changed his family's life. "I am a person (like everybody else)," Rhea added. "It took me a long time for me to realize that." People often come up to Rhea after hearing his story letting him know that he made a difference and because of him, I will wear my seatbelt for the rest of my life. "Indirectly I am probably saving lives. I may never know that. But, that's a cool feeling," Rhea said.

"First, my spinal cord allowed it (to recover tremendously from the injury). Secondary, a lot of willpower, belief in myself to prove my doctor wrong (made it possible for him)."Rhea also said his job is to give students first-hand experiences to let students know how instantly car accidents under the influence ruin someone's life. The program included a video, "It's My Life," which featured the graphic side of traffic accidents and personal interviews of college students whose lives totally changed because of DUI-related car accidents. "You do not just die in drunk driving crashes, you are killed violently and if you are able to escape death it is quite probable you will be tragically disabled for the remainder of your life," he said.Dan Vojta, senior marketing major and Student Athletic Advisory Committee president, said it was important to remind students what would happen to them unless they are careful. "It's not until tragedy like that happens you start respecting your own life," Vojta said.Rhea is an active speaker who resides in Kansas City, Mo. He has been the lead speaker for the Think First Foundation of Kansas City for the past six years, speaking more than 100 times per year to students in Kansas City. He uses his experience with overcoming quadriplegia to convey his story. Now he is able to walk, run, ski and golf.

Hello Everyone!

Just got back from speaking at the SEIFC Conference in Atlanta and had a wonderful time. I presented my "Bars Cars and Catastrophes" program on Saturday the 18th. It was in the last session of the conference and the numbers of attendee's showed. It was a little disappointing because I wanted to get my message out to more people. But the one's who did attend my presentation gave me great evaluations. Every single one said bring the presentation back for next year, and retain the speaker as well. Which made me feel really good, but the comments on the evaluations were amazing. Here is a sampling;
"People need to hear this! Bring him back! Great stuff!"
"Hell Yes. Best session of the conference."
"Very passionate about topic, very effective."
"Scared the hell out of me! It is going to be an extremely busy month for me. I have recently signed on with the Missouri Coalition for Life Saving Cures. I am incredibly honored to be a part of such a great cause. Our coalition came together because Missouri Legislators for the past five years have trying ban and criminalize early stem cell research. We feel this is a great injustice to Missourians and its medical research institutions, like The Stowers Institute in Kansas City. www.missouricures.com Please go to the web site and read all about our stem cell initiative.
I am also speaking at the Southeastern Interfraternal Conference (SEIFC) on February 18th, next traveling to Western Illinois on the 22nd of February, then flying to Utah and speaking to both Utah State and Weber State March 6th and 8th.
I am excited about the presentations! Anytime I have an opportunity to share my message, I have an opportunity to save someone's life. To save someone from a catastrophic injury. To make a difference in this world. What we do in life, echoes in eternity.

Joe

Hello!

Well I have finally done it. I have officially tied the knot to the most wonderful woman. Jenny has been nothing short of a miracle in my life, and I am so incredibly grateful for her. We were married on January 14th. The wedding was small and intimate, just like we wanted. Jenny was stunning, I will try to put a few pictures on the web site for you all to see.
Anyway, life is pretty hectic for me, I am working with the Missouri Coalition For Life Saving Cures, speaking for Think First, and presenting my programs all over the country. I will be speaking at a conference in Atlanta this Feb 19th, speaking at Western Illinois Feb 22nd, Utah State Mar 6th, and Weber State March 7th or 8th. Then I will presenting for the National Think First Conference in San Francisco in April. I am excited for all of it!

Warm Regards~

Happy New Year!

It is three days until my wedding and I am getting more and more excited with each passing minute. Its something that I believe very deeply in, and hope that someday scientists will find cures and therapies for people who suffer.

I plan on being as active as I can in this endeavor over the next year. It will all come to a vote in Missouri next November. So time is of the essence. I will also be as dedicated to my programs and speaking as ever! The more I speak and get out there, the more apparent it becomes that my voice and message needs to be heard.
I have been selected to speak at the SEIFC ( Southeastern Interfraternity Conference) in Atlanta this coming February 18th. This will have been the second year in a row I have been selected to go to Atlanta in February. Last year the NCAA chose me as their keynote speaker for their Champs Life Skills Conference. What an awesome experience!

But most important on my list at this time is the marriage to my future wife Jenny this January 14th. Today however I wanted to share with you the editorial that I had printed in the KC Star on 11/9 under the "As I See It," opinion. I hope you enjoy and would value any feedback.

As I See It
‘Annoying’ traffic laws protect lives
By Joe RheaSpecial to The Star
On Oct. 25, Mardelle Busch wrote that traffic officers should issue warrants and stop giving tickets to “law-abiding citizens.” That’s nonsense.
More than 45,000 people a year die from car crashes. Most of those crashes result from some form of violation or inattentive driving.
We take for granted every single day why we have traffic laws, and most of us abuse them on a consistent basis. Just because you don’t get caught for speeding every time, doesn’t mean you’re not “breaking the law.”
Let me tell you why we have those “traffic laws.” More people under the age of 33 die in car crashes than any other cause of death. In a car crash, you are more likely to suffer a catastrophic spinal cord injury or brain injury , both of which are incurable. And remember this, you just don’t die in a car crash, you are killed violently!
We throw around the word accident way to often when we refer to car crashes. Accident implies unpreventable events. Most car crashes are preventable. In Missouri the three main causes of car crashes are 1) inattention, 2) speeding and 3) drinking and driving. None of these causes are accidents. Just because you didn’t mean to, doesn’t mean it constitutes as an accident. Almost all car crashes are preventable and are caused by a driver doing something wrong.
As the lead speaker for the Think First Foundation of Kansas City, a brain and spinal cord injury prevention foundation, I have met more than enough individuals who have survived car crashes and are now left a with permanent reminder of why there are traffic laws.
They are left to sit in their wheelchairs for life, wishing that they would have followed the traffic laws or wishing that the other driver would have done the same.
Traffic laws are laws for very good reasons. Unfortunately we all break them at times, and that is why we need traffic officers to do their job — to write those annoying but needed tickets, so that maybe a life is saved that day. Possibly it could be yours or mine.
Joe Rhea is the lead speaker for the Think First Foundation. He lives in Raytown.

email this

print this

Hello again!

I wanted to share with you all a letter from Walter Goffigan, Program Director for Diversity and Life Skills at Kansas State University.

"On September 15th, Joe Rhea came and spoke to our students-athletes, coaches, and support staff. Joe relayed his message, "Think First then Think BIG!" to the audience. Joe inspired the audience by his personal trials and accomplishments in his life, along with stories from others he had come in contact with over the years. In his message, Joe spoke about being the best you can be for that day because you never know what tomorrow will bring; to focus on goals for that day because what you do that day can change your life. Joe also spoke about treating others with respect and to have the courage to make mistakes, because from those mistakes you will learn to overcome obstacles in your life. It gives me great honor to write this letter of recommendation for Joe Rhea for his heart-felt inspiring message to the audience."

Wow! Sometimes you wonder as speaker did they get what you were trying to say? I had a great time meeting and getting to know Walter Goffigan, a former NFL football player. I am thankful for his wonderful letter, but more importantly, thankful to have met such a kind hearted man. Who welcomed me into his home and to meet his family. It is not often enough when we hear of such good people. Thank you Walter!

I hope to spread my message and story to all Universities. I spoke at Kansas State University on the 15th of September, and then spoke at Westminster College in New Wilmington PA on the 18th. Both hearing my Bars Cars and Catastrophes program.
I actually spoke in Bramlage coliseum at KSU in front of their entire Athletic Department. It was unique in the sense that they lowered their scoreboard, the huge scoreboard to show the powerful video "Its My Life." It made quite an impact on the students to see such a graphic yet purposeful video. The video is a part of my Bar Cars and Catastrophes program. It was donated to me by the Missouri Highway Patrol, and it will make you think twice about ever getting into a car again when having been drinking.
Bars Cars and Catastrophes doesn't only focus on death and mayhem associated with alcohol and driving, it also focuses on life changing injuries that also result from drinking and driving, or just drinking for that matter.
Most of us never even think about what it would be like to break your neck in a drunk driving related car crash, and be paralyzed from the neck down for the rest of your life. My program is a fresh and unique twist on what can happen when one drinks in excess and gets behind the wheel of a car.
It s a perfect program for spring break, or any drinking and driving prevention needs.

Joe

Hello All!

I wanted to let you all know that I have officially decided on the title of my new program. Its going to be called,
BARS, CARS and CATASTROPHES!
A drinking and driving prevention program.

It will be very similar to that of my Think First portion of my previous program. However it will have a larger emphasis on the perils of drinking and driving, and the catastrophe's that can follow.

Our students need to know that you just don't die in drunk driving traffic crashes, you are killed violently. Not to mention often times catastrophically disabled for life with a brain or spinal cord injuries. There are worse things in life than death and or going to jail for a couple of years. My program will address these issues in great detail.

I have now added an incredibly powerful video that, as I like to say, " this will sting a bit". Its called 'Its My Life," and will leave your students speechless.
I can not express enough to you in this news update, the conviction of which I writing with. Its time for our students to get it! Its time for them to be ticked off when they hear about someone they know has died in a drunk driving car crash. My program will do just that!

My new marketing materials are in the works and should be available very soon. In the meantime, do not hesitate to call and ask me anything about my program, BARS, CARS and CATASTROPHES!

Please read my latest testimonial about my program, it was given on 8/31/05. I look forward to hearing from you soon!

I should have my latest testimonial from Kansas State very soon as well.

~ Joe
913 486 9180

I wanted to put a description of my Think First then Think Big program on my website. I wanted to clarify exactly what my program will address. It is a perfect fit for any alcohol or drinking and driving program on any campus.

On September 11th 1984 Joe Rhea sustained one of the single most catastrophic injuries a human being can endure. While playing football he broke his neck, and was left paralyzed from the neck down. " Be prepared to spend the rest of your life in a wheelchair," was what Joe was told at the age of 14. It was at that moment that Joe made the decision that would forever shape his life. Remaining in that wheelchair was simply not an option.
Today Joe Rhea is a walking, running, snow-skiing, single digit handicap golfing medical miracle. Even today his neurologist is amazed at what he can do. His story is truly inspirational on so many levels.
Joe Rhea is one of the leading voices in Kansas City on injury prevention. He has been the lead speaker for the Think First Foundation of Kansas City for the past five years, speaking over 100 times per year to students in Kansas City. Think First is a global non-profit foundation, that speaks all over the world to students k-12 on Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Prevention.
Joe is also a charter member on the VIP (Voices in Injury Prevention) Task Force. The task force has been funded by the Christopher Reeve Foundation. Its mission is to strengthen the voice of Think First, and to promote Think First all over the world. Joe had the opportunity to speak at its annual conference this past April in New Orleans. One participant wrote, "Joe amazing job! Can someone "get high" on Think First? The answer is YES after listening to you! Its about passion for Joe Rhea."
Since the Think First Foundation speaks only on the k-12 grade levels, Joe has created a program specifically designed for college aged students. A program that will challenge your students to think first and understand that in one second their whole lives can change.
Joe Rhea’s catastrophic life changing event has taught him many lessons in life. It forced him to adapt and reevaluate. To see things in a different light. It has taught him how to succeed. As a result of this growth, he has created a keynote presentation sharing this valuable information. His story will truly inspire you!
Think First then Think BIG!
His keynote will teach your audience
*how to protect their most valuable assets, their brain and spinal cord
*about the perils of drinking and driving
*how drinking affects the brain
*that catastrophic life changing injuries occur more often in car crashes
*how brain and spinal cord injuries affect families
*why to Think First in all situations
*That Thinking Big is paramount for dreams and goals
*to strive for higher goals
*how to achieve those goals
*that the power lies within themselves to accomplish the extraordinary
*To Believe in Themselves

Hello again,

Well the school year is nearly upon us, and I am more excited than ever. I have decided to add an alcohol program for college students. So I have to come up with a new title for my program. I would love your feedback. Right now I have come up with two different options.
The first being, "From the Bar, To the Car, To the Wheelchair."
The second being, "Cocktails, Cars, and Catheters, Do you really want to drink and drive?"
If any of you can think of a snappy program title I am all ears. Tiger Woods is again The Open Champion. That's awesome! While Tiger Woods is undoubtedly the most talented golfer in the world, and he is arguably also the most mentally tough golfer in the world. Without mental toughness, he would only be an average golfer at best. You can take the best athletes in the world, the best corporate executive officers in the world, and the ones that rise to the top, are the ones that have mental fortitude. They have the ability to stay focused, to remember that the achievement of the goal is what they set out to accomplish. To finish! Tiger Woods is now 9 major titles from achieving his goal of breaking the record of 18 major wins held by Jack Nicklaus. I have no doubt he will achieve this goal.
What are your goals? Do you have goals? Daily goals, weekly goals, monthly goals, yearly goals, and lifelong goals. Do you have something to strive for? Do you challenge yourself? I only ask because I find people often have no goals at all, and are afraid to even set them. I have found that achieving goals, big or small, gives one some sense of pride. It tells you that YES YOU CAN. You have to ask the question. But first you have to set the goal. Set the goal! Just get it done.

What's up!

Man its hot in Kansas City. I think its been in the 90's for two weeks straight now. That's okay though, my body does much better in the heat than it does in the cold. People always ask me then how did I manage to live in Vail Colorado if I don't like the cold. Have you ever seen " A Christmas Story?" Well if you have, then you'll remember the little brother, and how he was dressed. That's how I did it!
When I think of Vail, I think of freedom. I have never felt more free in my life than I did when I was living in Vail. I tell every student that before they settle down and start pursuing a career, to go live in the mountains or go live on a beach. To play! Life is to short to just work all the time. You must have a balance. I work to play, not work to live. So should you. Its never to late to chase your dreams! I had a great time and played a lot of golf in 72 hrs. 84 holes to be exact. I have also completed more than 20 official rounds of golf this summer, which means my handicap can now be correctly calculated. I've done it! My official handicap is 9.11. Ironic when think of the anniversary of my spinal cord injury. Reaching this goal once again reiterates to me, that almost anything is possible. Remember I am still partially paralyzed in my upper extremities, and even I was able to accomplish this goal. The goal of being a single-digit handicap golfer. Which if you ask any golfer is rather difficult. I wanted it badly, I worked hard for it, remained focused, and yes believed that it was going to happen! I am very proud of the accomplishment, considering all that I have been through, and still go through today.
What makes you proud about yourself? Do you set goals everyday? Even just one simple goal, everyday can make a difference in your life. I challenge all of you to do this. It can't hurt. It is the 13th oldest Rotary club in the world. It went great! The Rotarians were incredibly kind to me, and all seemed very intent on making me feel welcome. So much in fact, that I honestly was not nervous speaking to them. That is very rare for me, not to feel nervous. Yes its true, even professional speakers get nervous. Even Michael Jordan got nervous, which by the way helps me relax, knowing that the greatest basketball player of all time got nervous. Thank you Rotary 13 for a wonderful time!
I want to congratulate Michael Campbell on winning the US Open. How tough it must have been. His winning the title gives me an opportunity to tell you that one of the four attributes that I speak about is FOCUS. To be able to accomplish one's goals in life, one has to be able to stay focused. As Michael Campbell walked up the 18th fairway, he said that he must have said "stay focused," at least 30 times. His ability to stay focused and persevere with the world's number 1 Tiger Woods on his tail will be remembered for eternity.
What we do in life, echoes in eternity. Make it count.

Regards,

Joe

Welcome to my website. I am very excited and grateful to Carina Spencer for getting my website up. I hope you enjoy it and find it insightful.
Now that the school year is behind me, things are slowing down.
During the school year I speak for Think First, a brain and spinal cord injury prevention foundation. I spoke to over 32,000 students k-12 in the Kansas city area. Please check out the link. www.thinkfirst.org
Aside from my local role I am involved on a national level being part of the VIP task force with Think First. This task force is funded by the Christopher Reeves Foundation.
Next week I am fortunate to have the opportunity to speak to Kansas City's Rotary Club, this organization is the 13th oldest rotary in the world. I am speaking at the same podium as Harry Truman and Ronald Reagan, as you can imagine I am thrilled.
Thanks again for stopping and feel free to email me at joerhea@joerhea.com

Regards~
Joe
